What is Tokat famous for? Is it the ancient history of the place or its newly attained notoriety? The answer to this question is not that simple. Tokat is located in the north-central part of Turkey. The region of Anatolia has a rich historical heritage. The 12th-century Garipler mosque along with several other 10th century landmarks from Ottoman, Ilkhanate, and Seljuq eras are enhancing the glory of the city and making it a popular tourist destination. When so many historical places are there, it is obvious that historical artifacts are also present in the city. In early 2015, an old painting of the famous painter Vincent van Gogh was found during a vehicle search in the city. There was a signature of the famous painter on the reverse side of the painting along with the stamp of the New York Metropolitan Museum. Later in the year, undercover cops busted few more rackets, recovering the important relic. Following a tip-off, the authorities arrested a trio when they were trying to off-load the stolen goods. The items that were seized included 50 historic coins, jewelry, and the most important one was the 1,000-year-old Bible. This Bible can make a major impact on the history of Christianity. The book cover is damaged, but the remaining 50 pages are in good condition. Delicate sheets of gold were used to design the religious symbols in this Bible. Turkish Anadolu Agency produced a video of the artifact where the images of the Bible can be clearly seen. One of the images is that of the Holy Cross and the other is that of Mother Mary is cradling a child. The figure of Jesus Christ is also seen in the tome. The entire book is written in an ancient language by the Assyrians. This speech is out of practice for about a millennia. The origin of the book is not known yet, but it is for sure that the tome will play an imperative role in history. The book will give a better insight into the inception of the religion during its early history. The Romans, Greeks, and the Assyrians were the first few cultures in the world to become Christian. During the first and third centuries, the new religion took place. Therefore, this Bible is of utmost importance as it can throw some light on the time when Assyrians became Christian. The police seized the smugglers who tried to sell this Bible to its potential customer but their fate remains unknown. Once Iraq’s deputy antiquities minister said in an interview that the militant groups steal artifacts and sell them and in case they are unable to sell them then they destroy it. The police suspect that the smugglers might have some Islamic connection, referring to the statement made by the minister and the way the smugglers operate. Now how do you want to remember Tokat?
