Who was Crazy Horse? Why is he considered the most powerful warrior and iconic Native American? Crazy Horse always believed that the Red Nation would rise up again and be a blessing to the world. He fought against the U. S. Federal government in a quest to make a place for the Red Nation. The person, who lived in the shadow of terror all his life, had a vision of global unity and freedom for his men. The leader who taught them how to lead a life with head held high, needs every bit of recognition from the world. The Chief Henry Standing Bear of Oglala Lakota want to commemorate a monument that is as big as the Crazy Horse’s vision with the help of famous sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski. The problem with the monument is that it was planned in such a big manner that even after seven decades the monument still remains unfinished. Moreover, nobody has any idea or an end date when the monument will take its final shape. So, what exactly was the story of Crazy Horse? The story dates back to 1840 when Crazy Horse was born. He was called ‘Curly’ back then because of his wavy hair. He was the member of Oglala Lakota (or Oglala Sioux), a tribe of the Great Sioux Nation. It was around the 1800s that the tribe was exposed to hunters and white trappers who would capture the member and transform their lifestyle and economy. This didn’t go down well with the tribe and a conflict started between the tribe and U.S. Federal Government. Curly was supposed to have a normal childhood, but at the age of 12, he witnessed the death of Chief Conquering Bear. He was brave and a skilled warrior who took part in many pivotal battles against the U.S. government, killing the General. In 1877, when Crazy Horse went for a negotiation, the interpreter somehow misinterpreted the message of Crazy Horse and that made the authorities believe that he was a threat. He was arrested and that is when he pulled out his knife to free himself. One of the infantry guards injured him with his bayonet that eventually led to his death. The present Chief Standing Bear wants the monument to be taller than the Mount Rushmore where the four Presidents faces are carved out. The monument of Crazy Horse will be 563 feet tall and 641 feet in length, whereas hi stallion will be 219 feet tall. After the death of Kurczak, Ruth, his wife took over. She planned to sculpt out the face of Crazy Horse first and open it as a tourist attraction to generate revenue. This is how the story of Crazy Horse and giant monument unfolded.
